about the project

I've been wanting to learn more about my family background for a few years now.

I had always known my Grandad was a charismatic and active guy, but after he passed away in 2015, I realized I really didn't know much about his life before I became a part of it. At his memorial party, on a sunny August day, I remember sitting on a deck overlooking the harbor, eavesdropping on two older men in the rocking chairs next to me while they traded wild tales about their adventures with my Grandad. There must be so many more stories that I've never heard, I thought. I vowed to collect more stories and attempt to reveal more about the people who I've spent so much time with, yet know so little about.

Now, I have two living grandparents, Nana and Grammy. To preserve their memories, document their stories, and learn more about both my family and myself, I decided to embark on this oral history project during my final semester at the University of Michigan. In Her Words features audio clips from interviews I conducted with my Nana, chronicling events in her life in words as well as in photographs and memoirs.

My goal at the beginning of the semester was to conduct interviews and gather artifacts from both my Nana and Grammy. However, with the arrival of coronavirus, I was unable to get to my Grammy. More to come soon on this, hopefully.
